Friday Movie and Discussion

This Friday our weekly meetup at 7pm is hosted by a member to show Valentino’s Ghost on the big TV. Narrated by Michael Farrell, filmmaker Michael Singh’s documentary explores how depictions of Arabs and Muslims have changed from the romanticized image of Rudolph Valentino’s The Sheik to contemporary representations of evil. This 2012 film has a 7.8/10 rating by the IMDb. You may not agree with every observation in Michael Singh’s documentary “Valentino’s Ghost.” But this engrossing examination of American perceptions of Arabs and the Arab world gets you thinking. -NYT Critics’ Pick

Do you want to HAM it up?

amateur radio logo

Several people have expressed interest in forming an amateur radio (HAM) club at the MakerSpace. We now have a volunteer, Randy,  ready to lead regular meetings starting Thursday, Sept. 24, at 7:30pm. Sign up below… Perhaps the most valuable activity of our new club will be to help newbies, like me, get licensed. Randy wants to emphasize that learning Morse code, while it may be fun, is no longer required! For both kids and adults, there is no age limit on FCC licenses. The Technician class license is the entry-level license of choice for most new ham radio operators. To earn the… (Read More)

Little Makers and Cups

Little Makers, pre-K kids, and their families meet up at the MakerSpace on the 2nd Friday of the month, 5-7pm. Children work together with their parents/caretakers to craft, create, invent, and explore! Just bring your ideas and creativity – we’ll provide the materials. This week we’ll be crafting and creating with CUPS. It is better to reduce your use of plastic cups, but don’t throw them out! Before you recycle them, let’s reuse them in an arts and crafts project. We’ll have our usual supply of construction paper, markers, crayons, glue, paint, yarn and scissors. We are looking for a volunteer… (Read More)

Ninjas Gather at CoderDojo

We are off to a great start with our CoderDojo meetings. We signed up four kids the first week, ages 6 to 12, despite last minute vacations and the threat of homework from the upcoming school year. The kids are working on the Javascript Hour of Code online lesson plan developed by Khan Academy. Completing these lessons will earn them their first level white belt in Javascript! Our adult meeting was attended by five enthusiastic members, eager to program despite a few technical glitches in our development platform (Javascript for Minecraft). Good news, the glitches were resolved over the weekend so… (Read More)

CoderDojo Organizational Meetings this Week

Our CoderDojo, a programming meetup for kids and adults will start meeting this week. Our planned scheduled is Tuesday at 7pm for kids, and 8pm for adults, and Saturday at 10am for kids. Our first topic is on learning Javascript and our first MakerSpace project is to create an event calendar system inside of a Minecraft server. We will then use the system to pull in Internet calendar info and graphics, e.g. to create dynamic posters for the current and coming attractions at the theater. Hmm, did I mention we are creating a Minecraft world to represent Greenbelt? Additional topics… (Read More)
