Business Sponsorship

MakerSpace Funding Model

From 2010 to 2016 we have developed three of our four major sources of funding to keep the Greenbelt MakerSpace open to the public, to develop new programs, and to expand our reach to meet the needs of Greenbelt and nearby communities. In the Spring of 2016 we announced our drive to complete the puzzle, to seek donations and sponsorship from local companies, both small businesses and larger corporations.

Sponsoring the Greenbelt MakerSpace is easy! We have several suggested annual funding levels from “Apprentice” ($50) to “Space Maker” ($5,000) in a variety of categories. Choose to support a specific program or event, to sponsor a person in need, to fund an expansion of services, or to contribute to our general operating fund.

Festivals. Our annual Maker Faire draws people from across the region to Historic Old Greenbelt to engage in conversations with makers, tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, artists, scientists and entrepreneurs. More than 2000 guests and 75 exhibits are planned for our 2016 event. We also participate in many other festivals in and around Greenbelt including the annual Green Man and Labor Day festivals.

Events. Every quarter, the week before Greenbelt Electronics Recycling day, the MakerSpace is transformed into an old fashioned repair shop staffed by volunteer repair specialists. We fix clothing, jewelry, appliances, electronics, computers, furniture, bicycles and much more. Our Repair Cafe is just one of many events we host every year.

Meetups. Our Friday Night Meetups are special times for people to gather to share and inspire others, or sometimes just to have some fun. Our activities include Family Game Night, Little Makers (Pre-K), Fermentation Fan Club, and Minecraft Challenges. We would like to add more Meetups, perhaps a Monday night technical seminar series?

FLL. FIRST LEGO League is our most popular STEM education program for kids in grades 4 though 9. Every Fall, students across Maryland and around the world form teams to compete for awards in robot design and participate a four month research project. The MakerSpace hosts four teams and supports teams at several local schools. We also have robotics for K-3, 9-12, and adults.

Classes. Our classes, workshops, and camp programs introduce kids and adults to exciting activities in computer science, microelectronics, robotics, art, and crafts. Help us keep our doors open with most activities free of charge. Or consider sponsoring a child in need to attend one of our week-long camps.

Mobile. We have a great facility at Roosevelt Center in Historic Old Greenbelt. But we are isolated, surrounded by major highways that discourage many families from participating in our programs. We want to turn this situation around, use our road system as a tool to take our resources to nearby communities where at-risk kids, unemployed teens, and struggling adults can benefit.

The “MAKE with MOTO” truck is an abandoned concept of the Motorola Advanced Technology and Projects team that we would like to embrace. We have no relationship with Motorola.
