Our History
History
The Greenbelt MakerSpace has gone through several transitions since its inception. Below is a quick timeline of changes:
- 2010: GreenSTEMs Inc., a non-profit corporation, is founded by Eva Fallon and George Boyce. This entity would later create the Makerspace.
- 2012: The Makerspace begins as a community clubhouse, initially known as “Club125.” It aimed to support educational programs, social events, and “maker” activities. The founders hoped to open the facility by early 2013 and started raising funds and recruiting members.
- April 2013: The Greenbelt Makerspace officially opened at 125 Centerway (hence the 125 in our name). It focused on science, technology, arts, and crafts, with a particular emphasis on computer science, robotics, and microelectronics.
- 2017: The ownership of the Makerspace was transferred from GreenSTEMs Inc. to a new, non-profit, community-owned cooperative. This change was modeled to align with Greenbelt’s long history of cooperative institutions. The Makerspace continues to offer programs and resources, and also hosts events like Repair Cafes where people can get items fixed, with our emphasis being on community and collaboration.
- 2021: The Greenbelt Makerspace Cooperative announced it was starting a tool lending library . They began accepting tool donations and began looking for volunteers to help organize and run the library. The stated goals for the tool library were and still are to promote equity, sustainability, community, learning, and cost-sharing.
Presently, The Greenbelt Makerspace operates primarily as a tool lending library, located in the Granite Building at Roosevelt Center. It continues to run periodic Repair Cafes and classes. Though the tool lending library is our current focus, we still have an interest in developing programs related to our original mission of science, technology, arts, and crafts.
